Cook-islands

This cover was received already back in September, but it represents new country for my collection (#276), the only single new country received in past 6 months. I thus present it here with the delay. This cover was kindly arranged by Jinesh Joseph from India. Thank you very much!

The Caribbean Netherlands (2015) Saba

On October 10, 2010, The Netherlands Antilles dissolved into 3 new territories: Curaçao and Saint Martin (Sint Maarten) joined independent status as Aruba previously received, and remaining islands (so called “BES islands”) formed the Caribbean Netherlands (Dutch Caribbean). These 3 new territories started to issue own stamps, labelled as Curaçao, Sint Maarten and Caribisch Nederland, respectively. I received my first cover from the Caribbean Netherlands on 2011. Unfortunately, the postal service in the Dutch Caribbean (operated by the Nieuwe Post Nederlandse Antillen (NPNA) based in Curaçao) didn’t work well. As a consequence of repeated compliances on bad quality of the postal services in the Caribbean Netherlands, The Minister of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation has appointed new postal operator for the Caribbean Netherlands. Since Jan 1, 2014, The Flamingo Express Dutch Caribbean started operating the postal service for this territory (for a period of 10 years). The new operator started to issue separate stamp issues for each of 3 islands. Therefore, each island (Bonaire, Saba and St. Eustatius) has own stamps of the Dutch Caribbean with the inscription of the islands’ name.

For collectors, this means that 3 new territories can be collected :).

My first new item arrived recently from the Saba island. Saba-2015_stamp Pat sent me nice postcard from his travel to this island. He used stamp of the bird series issued on 2014 (one first 3 issues). Thank you very much! Saba-2015_front

Vanuatu (2015)

I prepared couple of covers for my friends as well as members of the LCC (which were sent as circuits), and sent them to the Vanuatu Philatelic bureau with request for cancellation. The Postmaster did really a great job. All my three covers returned back perfectly cancelled. I also like the unusual Airmail label of the Vanuatu Post.

Thank you very much!

Norfolk Island (2015) Landscape

Norfolk_2015

Norfolk Island is small island in South Pacific Ocean located between Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia. It is part of the Commonwealth of Australia, but it has a large degree of self-governance. From the biological point of view, it is famous for its distinct conifer species that is depicted on the Norfolk flag and which is widely popular in Europe, i.e. Araucaria heterophylla. This species can be seen on some of stamps on cover too.

This cover was kindly prepared and sent by the Postmaster of the Norfolk Island Philatelic bureau. Thank you very much!

Palestine (2015) Gaza

Gaza strip of Palestine represents one of the most isolated territory. It is because of long-time civil war in the region. It was big surprise when I have found 4 mails from Gaza in my mailbox one day :).

Gaza_regularHazem sent me perfect cover from city of Rafah. He used 2 stamps from the bird series issued by the Palestinian Authority in 1997. Thank you very much!

Gaza_registeredJinesh, experienced collector from India, arranged for me registered cover from Gaza via Philatelic bureau in the Gaza city. This cover is unique because stamps used on cover are the “Gaza issues”. Due to the political split between the Fatah-controlled West Bank and the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip in 2009, there exist two separate postal administrations: The Ministry of Telecom & Information Technology in Gaza, and Palestine Post of the Palestinian Ministry of Telecom & IT in Ramallah/al-Bireh. Both are issuing stamps for their respective areas, although Gaza issues were not allowed for international use between 2009-2014. These stamps were issued in 2014, left stamp commemorates kids killed in the conflict, the right one depicts old Gaza.

Thank you very much friend!

T.A.A.F. (2015) Scattered Islands

Scattered islands in the Indian Ocean (Îles Éparses de l’océan Indien) is French Territory near Madagascar. On four out of five islands is post office and it challenges collectors to receive mail from all 4 islands. My first cover from the Scattered islands was received in 2012 from the Tromelin island. Later that year, I received cover from the Juan de Nova island.

And recently, I received the two missing islands:

Europa island is tropical atoll in the Mozambique Channel and it is the southernmost island among Scattered islands. The Europa island is uninhabited, but has a weather station, is visited by scientists and thus has temporary post office.

TAAF_Ile-Euopa_2015This cover was prepared by me and sent for cancellation to Ile Europa Postmaster.

Glorioso islands (Îles Glorieuses) are a group of islands and rocks in the northern Mozambique channel. The archipelago consists of two islands, Grande Glorieuse and Île du Lys, as well as eight rock islets (Roches Vertes): Wreck Rock, South Rock and Verte Rocks and three others that are unnamed.

Niger_registerdThis is example of registered cover from the Republic of Niger, which was sent at a same day as the regular cover above. It has different postmark. It arrived two days later than the previous cover, i.e. on March 18.

France (2014) Council of Europe

This cover was received more than a year ago. I decided to add this cover in order to have my geographical collection complete :).

Council-of-Europe

Council of Europe was founded in 1949 as an advisory international organisation promoting co-operation between European countries in the areas of legal standards, human rights, democratic development, the rule of law and cultural co-operation. Nowadays it has 47 member states and it is independent from the European Union. There is a post office in the Council of Europe building in Strasbourg with its own postmark. The organisation has also own special issues of French stamps inscribed with the “Conseil de l’Europe”, but all French stamps are valid at CoE post office.

This cover was received with kind help of the postmaster of the Council of Europe post office. Thank you very much!

Cape Verde (2015)

Although many collectors consider african archipelago of Cape Verde an “easy-to-get” country, it was difficult country for me. Couple of previous attempts failed, eventhough my cover was delivered to Philatelic bureau (and postage used was correct). Finally received as territory #254 because of help of Holger, who visited this country on January this year. Holger prepared two perfect covers and sent them on Jan 14 from Santa Maria (Sal).

When leaving Cape Verde, the registered cover was already one day delayed compared to regular cover (see obverse side of covers), arriving to Czechia 5 days after the regular cover. This is caused by different handling operations of regular and registered mails. Thank you very much Holger!

Crimea (2014) from Ukraine to Russia

Crimea is a Penninsula in the northern part of the Black Sea. It has very interesting nature and culture. Mountains of Crimea host very interesting flora and fauna. The region underwent turbulent transformations this year (2014).  On March 17, the Crimean Parliament declared independence from Ukraine as a consequence of the referendum. A day after, Russia and the government of Crimea signed a treaty of accession of the Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol into the Russian Federation. Although there is strong controversy about the annexation and the political dispute was not solved at the international level, the Crimea is de facto under full control of Russia.

The transformation is also interesting from the philatelic point of view. I want to show you several covers of this year, which I received with great help of collectors in Crimea.

First cover that I have received this year was the gorgeous cover sent by Tanya from Simferopol. It was posted on February 25, i.e. in the period of the Ukrainian control over the territory. Tanya sent me this beautifully designed cover using the Coat of Arms from the Crimea MS issued in 2013.

On March 7, Tanya from Sevastopol sent me another nice cover from Crimea. Actually, the city of Sevastopol deserved special status within Ukraine as well as within Russia. This cover arrived perfectly cancelled, showing the date of period still under control of Ukraine.

sevastopol

On March 25, Julia from Sevastopol sent me another nice cover. In this period, the treaty between Crimean and Russian government was signed. From the Russian point of view, the Republic of Crimea and the Sevastopol city were already part of the Russian federation. As you can see, Ukrainian stamps had still been in use.

And finally, many many thanks to Viktoria! Cover from the Russian Crimea using Russian stamps sent on August 21. And special stamps: issue of June 16, depicting the Republic of Crimea. Perfect. And story completed :).

It is difficult to judge how difficult or happy was this period of transformation for the people of Crimea. Based on information written to me by these collectors, my impression is that Crimeans preferred and enjoyed the Russian annexation. I want to thank you again Tanya and Tanya, Julia and Viktoria for perfect covers and for sending me these nice covers in periods of the History. And wish to all people of Crimea and Ukraine a peace!
