GEOGRAPHIC PHILATELY | Covers & Postcards Worldwide

Covers and postcards sent to my address from different countries of the world.

Abkhazia (“2015”) >>stollen covers<<

This post is unusual post. Not only because of showing cover from very “rare” territory, but also because of showing the cover, which I haven’t received. Total of 10 covers were posted from the inaccessible place, but only covers sent to Czechia were stollen, all other covers to 7 countries were safely delivered.

The rare country mentioned above is Abkhazia, one of the rarest countries among cover collectors. Abkhazia is autonomous territory of Georgia, it lies in the north-western corner of the country. Under Georgia’s official designation it is Autonomous republic of Abkhazia. Since August 2008, the territory consider itself an independent country, but de facto  it is occupied by the Russian federation and it represents the “frozen” conflict similar to other territories occupied by Russia (e.g. Transnistria in Moldova or “Donbas” region in Ukraine).

From the philatelic point of view, there were plenty of illegal (cinderella) stamps allegedly issued by Abkhazia in the past, however the only official issue (issued by the Russian post) is a single issue of 2013 (see it used on cover here). This issue (as well as any other illegal issues) can’t be used on mail outgoing outside the Russian Federation, the 2013 issue is supposed to be used on mails going to Russia only (Abkhazia is not UPU member, thus it can’t be used internationally). However, the stamp became rare quickly and in practice, only Russian stamps are used in postal service. All the mail is collected in the Sukhumi (capital of Abkhazia), Russian stamps are used on letters, and then all the mail is transferred by cars to Sochi in Russia, where all letters receive the Russian postmark of Sochi (Сочи). Thus the mail from Sukhumi is practically unrecognizable from mail posted from Russian Sochi. Cover received from Abkhazia represents one the the rarest items in cover collections worldwide.

A friend of mine arranged to send 10 covers from Sukhumi, sent as regular mail, i.e. using Russian stamps as usually (with 2 exceptions) and with the Sukhumi Post Office postmark on the backside, three covers were addressed to me, seven covers were addressed to my friends. All covers were posted in Sukhumi on July, covers to Asia has the postmark of July 8, covers to Europe has the postmark of July 21. First cover out of 10 was delivered to Russia, Yuri has received his cover around July 17. Covers sent to Europe arrived around August 10 (and based on my experience, my cover very likely arrived to Czechia at the same date), Miloš (Slovakia), Holger (Belgium), Roland (France) and Florian (Austria) received covers between August 10-11. Finally, it arrived to Jinesh Joseph in India and to Ralph in Philippines around August 18. Unfortunately, my 3 covers were stollen on it’s way. If all other friends would not receive their covers, I would suspect that clerk at P.O. took money but failed to send covers. But it is unlikely,  all friend in 7 different countries received covers, thus it had to be stollen in Czechia. Furthermore, after investigations, it is now confirmed that it was not the only case of stealing rare philatelic items, more rare covers were stollen with the help of the Czech Post this year😦. This makes very bad impression of the Czech Post and confirms the bad rumours on image of the company as eastern-minded relic of socialist period in our country.

And how the cover from one-of-the-rarest-country look like? I feel sorry I can’t show my own cover, but here are examples of covers sent to my friends🙂.

Cook islands (2015) nature

Cook-islands

This cover was received already back in September, but it represents new country for my collection (#276), the only single new country received in past 6 months. I thus present it here with the delay. This cover was kindly arranged by Jinesh Joseph from India. Thank you very much!

Pitcairn Islands (2015)

Pitcairn

Another example of excellent work done by the Philatelic bureau. The interesting issue of the Philatelic bureau of the Pitcairn Islands is that it is located in Wellington, New Zealand. Therefore, this cover never touched the Pitcairn Islands grounds, but was dispatched from the New Zealand. However, it doesn’t change the fact that the postmark is gorgeous🙂.

Thank you very much!

Iran (2015) alphabet

IR_cover

This rare item was sent by Wolfgang, who recently visited this country. He wrote me that sending covers from Iran was quite challenging because of limited availability of stamps and “open” postage rates. Thank you very much, Wolfgang, for your effort and sending this great cover!

Poland (2015) Three-countries-point

PL_trojstyk

This exceptional cover was sent by Roman via the CCCC. It was posted from the village Istebna in Poland, which lies very close to point where Polish, Czech and Slovak border meet. Further, the mail was brought to nearby villages of Hrčava in Czechia and Čierne pri Čadci in Slovakia, which is commemorated by daily postmark of post-office in these villages. Thank you very much Roman for this truly interesting cover!

The Caribbean Netherlands (2015) Saba

On October 10, 2010, The Netherlands Antilles dissolved into 3 new territories: Curaçao and Saint Martin (Sint Maarten) joined independent status as Aruba previously received, and remaining islands (so called “BES islands”) formed the Caribbean Netherlands (Dutch Caribbean). These 3 new territories started to issue own stamps, labelled as Curaçao, Sint Maarten and Caribisch Nederland, respectively. I received my first cover from the Caribbean Netherlands on 2011. Unfortunately, the postal service in the Dutch Caribbean (operated by the Nieuwe Post Nederlandse Antillen (NPNA) based in Curaçao) didn’t work well. As a consequence of repeated compliances on bad quality of the postal services in the Caribbean Netherlands, The Minister of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation has appointed new postal operator for the Caribbean Netherlands. Since Jan 1, 2014, The Flamingo Express Dutch Caribbean started operating the postal service for this territory (for a period of 10 years). The new operator started to issue separate stamp issues for each of 3 islands. Therefore, each island (Bonaire, Saba and St. Eustatius) has own stamps of the Dutch Caribbean with the inscription of the islands’ name.

For collectors, this means that 3 new territories can be collected🙂.

My first new item arrived recently from the Saba island. Saba-2015_stamp Pat sent me nice postcard from his travel to this island. He used stamp of the bird series issued on 2014 (one first 3 issues). Thank you very much! Saba-2015_front

Vanuatu (2015)

I prepared couple of covers for my friends as well as members of the LCC (which were sent as circuits), and sent them to the Vanuatu Philatelic bureau with request for cancellation. The Postmaster did really a great job. All my three covers returned back perfectly cancelled. I also like the unusual Airmail label of the Vanuatu Post.

Thank you very much!

Philippines (2015) Pope Francis

PH_pope-Francis_Ralph_2015

Ralph, a very experienced cover collectors from the Philippines, has sent me this perfect cover. He used the series issued on Jan 8, 2015, which commemorates the visit of His Holiness Pope Francis to the Philippines on January 15-19, 2015. The Philatelic bureau of the Philippines (PHL Post) says to this issue. “The spotlight will not be on the person of the Pope but on the communities devastated by “Haiyan”, the strongest typhoon on record, whose destructive path displaced four million people and flattened a million homes. Pictures of survivors, carrying religious images and clutching their rosaries while fleeing in the height of the typhoon’s devastation, are images of faith that have struck a chord in the common humanity that brings the world together in times of tragedy.”

Thank you very much for this perfect cover and stamps!

Norfolk Island (2015) Landscape

Norfolk_2015

Norfolk Island is small island in South Pacific Ocean located between Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia. It is part of the Commonwealth of Australia, but it has a large degree of self-governance. From the biological point of view, it is famous for its distinct conifer species that is depicted on the Norfolk flag and which is widely popular in Europe, i.e. Araucaria heterophylla. This species can be seen on some of stamps on cover too.

This cover was kindly prepared and sent by the Postmaster of the Norfolk Island Philatelic bureau. Thank you very much!

Japan (2015) Mt. Fuji and flowers

image

Tomoko sent me this superb cover, which looks even better in real than scanned here on the blog🙂. This perfect cover was made by using the newly issued stamps from the series “National Afforestation Campaign” (issued on May 15, 2015) and newly issued definitive stamps (3-yen Definitive Stamp; issued on Feb 2, 2015). Stamp in right corner depicts the Chocolate Lily (Fritillaria camschatcensis), stamp in left corner shows the Japanese Zelkova (Zelkova serrata). Cover was posted from the Fujiyoshida city that lies at foothill of the famous Mt. Fuji and which is commemorated by special postmarks.

Thank you very much for this gorgeous cover!

Latvia (2015) The EU council Presidency

LV_EU-presidency_2015

Uldis, member of the LCC, sent me another 5 great covers recently. I have chosen to present this one; the right-corner stamp commemorates the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.  The presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) rotates among the EU Member States every six months. The EU Council is an essential decision maker which together with the European Parliament (EP) adopts legislation and coordinates EU policies.

Thank you very much for the cover!

Germany (2015) 50th Anniversary of the Germany-Israel Diplomatic Relations

DE_2015_DE-IL-diplomatics

Britta sent me cover with stamp and special postmark commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Diplomatic relations between Germany and Israel. At first, Israel refused to establish relations with Germany due to the Hitler regime’s genocide during the Holocaust. However, relations gradually thawed as Germany offered to pay reparations in 1952, and diplomatic relations were officially established in 1965.

Thank you very much for the cover!

Palestine (2015) Gaza

Gaza strip of Palestine represents one of the most isolated territory. It is because of long-time civil war in the region. It was big surprise when I have found 4 mails from Gaza in my mailbox one day🙂.

Gaza_regularHazem sent me perfect cover from city of Rafah. He used 2 stamps from the bird series issued by the Palestinian Authority in 1997. Thank you very much!

Gaza_registeredJinesh, experienced collector from India, arranged for me registered cover from Gaza via Philatelic bureau in the Gaza city. This cover is unique because stamps used on cover are the “Gaza issues”. Due to the political split between the Fatah-controlled West Bank and the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip in 2009, there exist two separate postal administrations: The Ministry of Telecom & Information Technology in Gaza, and Palestine Post of the Palestinian Ministry of Telecom & IT in Ramallah/al-Bireh. Both are issuing stamps for their respective areas, although Gaza issues were not allowed for international use between 2009-2014. These stamps were issued in 2014, left stamp commemorates kids killed in the conflict, the right one depicts old Gaza.

Thank you very much friend!

T.A.A.F. (2015) Scattered Islands

Scattered islands in the Indian Ocean (Îles Éparses de l’océan Indien) is French Territory near Madagascar. On four out of five islands is post office and it challenges collectors to receive mail from all 4 islands. My first cover from the Scattered islands was received in 2012 from the Tromelin island. Later that year, I received cover from the Juan de Nova island.

And recently, I received the two missing islands:

Europa island is tropical atoll in the Mozambique Channel and it is the southernmost island among Scattered islands. The Europa island is uninhabited, but has a weather station, is visited by scientists and thus has temporary post office.

TAAF_Ile-Euopa_2015This cover was prepared by me and sent for cancellation to Ile Europa Postmaster.

Glorioso islands (Îles Glorieuses) are a group of islands and rocks in the northern Mozambique channel. The archipelago consists of two islands, Grande Glorieuse and Île du Lys, as well as eight rock islets (Roches Vertes): Wreck Rock, South Rock and Verte Rocks and three others that are unnamed.

TAAF_Iles_Glorieuses_2015This cover was kindly arranged by Roland, Head of LCC.
